The Hangover

by alumpofsugar

Following every weekend, without fail, I have a friend or an acquaintance moaning and groaning about their pounding headache, nausea, or exhaustion from the excitement that was the previous night. Being hungover is one of my Top Ten Worst Feelings, up there with being heartbroken and getting pulled over for speeding.

Long gone are the days that I could drink until last call, stumble home and [miraculously] make it to work a few hours later without so much as a little under eye baggage. Not to mention, it’s just not all that fun now.

Hangovers are brutal. They hurt. They threaten your Tomorrows with promises to f-ck up every last plan on the agenda. And the funny thing is: we know exactly how to avoid a hangover, yet we never quite apply that knowledge to ourselves.

So, what’s the Next Best Thing? Hangover cures.

I think 99% of the people I’ve spoken with say that pho is their one stop shop for curing a gnarly hangover.

I can’t.

I used to go to grab a steaming bowl of pho with an order of fried rice and egg rolls with my girlfriends immediately after a night of boozing and dancing, or the following morning, week after week, year after year. If I’m not mistaken, more bonding and albeit drunk laughter was shared at the pho restaurant than at the bars or clubs.

Now the mere thought of pho gets me queasy.

I’ve heard that some claim that coffee, working out, Gatorade, Powerade, more alcohol, vitamins, juice, or water cures their hangovers in a snap.

The only way I survive the day after a night of drinking:

1. chugging a liter of water before sleeping
2. waking up and eating a few slices of pan fried toast with a little olive oil
3. more water
4. 10-12 hours of sleep
5. something greasy (fried chicken, pizza, a burger, fries, or more pan fried toast)
6. more sleep
7. Repeat until I feel better.

What are your hangover cures?

On a slightly off topic…Does anyone else eat their toast like me? I heat my frying pan, drizzle some olive oil, and fry my bread until it’s slightly crisp on the outside and still soft in the center. It’s my ultimate comfort food.
